I can never stress enough to a bride and groom that a wedding day timeline is so very important to the overall success of their event. It doesn't mean that they are micro-managing every little minute of the day, but it rather gives them, their bridal party, families, and vendors a guide to go by so that everything that the couple wanted to accomplish gets done.
I do let them know, however, that timelines are only guides and not to be objects of stress and major concerns. Life is not perfect and no matter how much we plan and plan, some things are out of our control---the weather, the traffic, an electrical outage, etc.
The timeline gives everyone a simple guide to follow. It shows the flow of the day. It allows your caterer to plan when to serve the salad, the entree, and the dessert. It gives your mother an idea of when you will be cutting your cake. It gives your photographer a great over view of the day so that they can plan accordingly to get all of those great shots you asked them for, etc.
Plan well and wisely, fine tune your timeline as much as you like, but then on the day of your wedding, let it unfurl as needed and enjoy all aspects of your perfect day. After all, you already did the preparation work--now it is time to enjoy all that the day has to offer you.
