January | Bridal Shows

By now, you have been bombarded by advertising mediums promising you a bridal show with each coming weekend in January.  Most of the larger shows have already had their day, but by the e-mails that are landing on our desk, there are more to come.   There is a way to navigate through the shows and still keep your sanity even though it can be shoulder to shoulder at every corner.   We thought that a handy guide might be in order, lest you get lost in Bridal-Show-World!

1.  Rule number one is not to go to a show by yourself.  This is a great rule to follow.  When you attend a show that is wall to wall people, a second body can be very helpful when navigating the myriads of booths, finding that one vendor that you have been dying to meet, signing you up for free honeymoons, and gettting that second piece of wedding-cake-to-die-for.  When you go down one side and your partner goes down another side, you have a greater chance of gathering material and not missing an important contact.  Besides, it is always more fun to attend an event with another person (remember this when sending out wedding invitations!).

2.  Go to each show armed with a sturdy totebag that you can sling over your shoulder.  It will be handy for bringing home all of the "goodies" that you pick up and for being able to keep both hands free helps for trying those two types of cheese dip offered by that swanky new caterer.

3.  Bring the following with you beside your totebag - trust me, you will be glad that you did....
  • A small notebook and pen; to jot down notes about something you see or phone numbers.
  • Small sticky dots; these are very handy for those vendors that you were impressed with.  Put a small dot on their business card.  This will be a handy referrence when you review the piles of advertising that you gathered at a later date.
  • Bring address labels.  As a vendor, I can tell you that we appreciate these more than anything;  they give us a legible address to contact you with.   As a bride, you will appreciate the fact that by placing a stickered name/address label on the forms that you will fill out, you will not only save your writing hand, but also valuable time.  Standing while being jostled about trying to write down your name, address, e-mail address, date of wedding, finance's name, ceremony and recpetion venue.....well,, you get the idea.
  • A camera to take pictures - just make sure to ask before you snap the pic.  Many of the designs that you see are protected by copyrite, so you don't want to get into trouble for being enthusiastic about that beautiful wedding dress that you want to show your mother.
  • Wear comfy shoes.  I think this comment is pretty self-explanitory.

4.  Ask questions.  Each vendor that attends a bridal show hopes that they have that one service or product that your have been looking for.  They are there to help you create memories for your wedding day.  Talk with them and don't be afraid to ask questions.  They may not have what you are looking for at that particular bridal show but it doesn't meant that they don't have what you want.  Ask!

5.  Sign up for everything.  Many vendors give discounts at Bridal Shows.  If you are looking to save precious wedding budget dollars, then getting a free tuxedo for your groom was worth the label that you pasted on the sign up sheet.

6.  Be open to new ideas.  Be willing to think outside the box when it comes to finding new services for your wedding day.   There are wonderful new products being introduced to the wedding market every year.

7.  Have fun and ....... eat Cake!
